Opening Reception Friday, March 4th 5-8pm

ON VIEW MARCH 2022 - MAY 2022

DAVID RUGGERI born. 1970

“Mahna Mahna (Do Do Do Do Do)” Animal in the 60’s.
“I hanker for a hunk of cheese.” Time For Timer in the 70’s.
 “…WAKA WAKA WAKA WAKA…” Pac-Man in the 80’s.

In the exhibition, Re-Play, Ruggeri leans into the past pulling nostalgia and iconic images back into view. The bright colors, layers of texture, and highlights give these images depth and make them explode off the canvas. These works bring the artist and viewer to a specific place and time for reflection; an arcade in a long-abandoned mall, a living room console television set on a Saturday morning decades ago, or their first sneakers in a fashion statement that was just beginning.

In these works, Ruggeri is attempting to reconnect the viewer with their past, spark memories long-forgotten and remember carefree moments from their younger self.

BRANDON D. CHAVIS born. 1989

“A Walk In Our Shoes”, is a series of deconstructed shoe paintings that time stamp the physical journey of four individuals. Although these sneakers are idealized, these works explore deeper into the “souls” of these shoes, highlighting the previous owner's footprints to success.

Throughout my work, I aim to tell the stories of marginalized figures from an understanding of queerness, through expressions of Blackness. I learn from my subjects through interviews, case studies, and meditation to translate a vivid emotional depiction of their essence as an avatar. I carefully dissect materials to learn their anatomical structure and how to intermingle their stories with the avatars, while also allowing myself to be a spiritual medium for the treasures being reborn through my art. For me, the unknown travel and the many hands contributing to its final destination to my workspace give the avatar a life force.
