When I ventured into art near the end of my career as a writer, I was drawn to browns, rusts and grays. The muted colors evoked the fields and stones of the New Jersey countryside where I roamed as a child. For years, my work was defined by this palette. When Covid forced our world into isolation, I sought daily refuge in my studio. I took advantage of a variety of the suddenly abundant online classes to explore new forms of expression. As the months stretched on, I was surprised to find myself using color. It wasn’t long before I had a new body of colorful work. On observing the work, a friend remarked: Maybe you had to get through the muck to get to the light.
