FOUND WOODEN COMMERCIAL
27.5” X 23” X 4.5”
“I construct my work from fragments of found and fabricated commercial signage, repurposing the discarded wood into visual stutters of sounds and ideas that borrow from the language of modernist painting, contemporary advertising, and technology. The work often has a nostalgic tone, as its surfaces carry the residue of accumulated experiences, traces of wear and weather. From real estate signs to closed restaurants, scavenged from roadways and wastelands of suburban sprawl, these pieces salvage remnants of St. Louis’ commerce and reimagine its language. The language that appears on signage is direct and economical. I disrupt that efficiency, breaking the text from context and rules of grammar, redirecting attention to the subtle nuances of visual form.”
The reconstructed pieces of found commercial signage in "dash" reminded me of an old gymnasium floor, with its nostalgic surface and primary colors of red and blue. The text has a sense of play, with its bubble-like O’s sliding across the surface or jockeying for position.
