Watercolor, thrifted yearbooks collage on mixed media board
$400
Zoë Finkelstein is a mixed-media artist living in St. Louis, MO. She graduated from Washington University in St. Louis in 2020 with a BFA in Studio Art and a minor in Psychology. The artist’s work explores themes of nostalgia, comfort, memory, anxiety, and the passage of time through repetitive mark-making, pattern, and layering labor-intensive processes. Her latest series of mixed media pieces encapsulates these themes. Using old yearbooks dating back to 1946 bought at thrift stores and garage sales, Finkelstein selectively hand-cuts countless pages and collages the resulting grids of faceless portraits. Watercolor washes layering pinks, blues, and oranges are used as a base, peeking out through holes left by the precisely removed faces.
