I compose many of my paintings using an intuitive process of layering and excavating. I respond to a passage of acrylic immediately with a new color, a form, a suggestion of imagery, a deletion. I often grind into the layers with a power sander, revealing textures that crisscross, align, and twist like natural phenomena, formed from earlier brushstrokes. I arrange vivid hues of acrylic alongside subtle tones, or I can glaze translucent jewel-like passages of chroma over rich and opaque areas to blend the colors. I guide these elements to overlap, intertwine, and accentuate each other. As the piece evolves, stunning color “conversations” are unearthed from the amalgam of layers. The “wow” moment that I encounter when just the right move is made feels like the first human sensory experiences of early childhood.
