Justice Henderson is a visual artist, educator, and administrator based in St. Louis. Engaged with the abstraction of perceptual experience, her two-dimensional practice uses traditional and nontraditional materials - from oil paints to recycled cardboard - to isolate and transform moments for the mundane to be seen. Her observationbased work acts as vehicles to understand the relationships between people, objects, and environments that constitute one's identity and everyday life. Inspired by a trip to the Gulf of Mexico, the vastness of the water and sky evoked both awe and fear, similar to Edmund Burke's notion of the "sublime" from his 1757 book "A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful." From using self portraiture to experimenting with cardboard, the purpose of my work is to reimagine this concept through a Black lens, considering the natural landscape as a complex historical site for death and life, anxiety and hope, escape and freedom
