I am Kavan Ward, a multidisciplinary artist, who explores themes centered around escape and identity. I'm fascinated in how technologies have collectively shaped our understanding of self worth. Cellular devices, textiles waste, and physical enhancement has become normalized-and often glorified within the nations views and within my paintings I depict the Black form as an avatar; sometimes adorned with symbols of commodification, other times reduced to a silhouette marked by gold teeth. This serves as a critique of societal views and projections placed upon the Black image. The avatar becomes a mirror-reflecting the nation's obsession with the Black body while amplifying its contradictions. I create these characters hoping that viewers would find comfort in them, joining these pieces of creation in celebration, sadness and every emotion in between.
