“ I never actually wore the shoes. They were left in my possession by a former partner who moved in with me temporarily. He actually never wore them either. I had to vacate my studio and he wasn’t able to come back for his belongings, so I took as many of his things as I could with me-including these shoes, which I intended to turn into custom gas masks back in 2017, long before we knew masks would become part of our daily lives. The shoes were unfortunately stolen not long after I started deconstruction-and though they were recovered, I never finished the project.
I guess the obstacles lie in losing my studios. I was renting two in the same building and it got infested with vermin, so I had to leave and left thousands and thousands of dollars worth of stuff in the properties. I was at the very beginning of my career as a professional artist & lost all sense of stability, home, workplace-in an instant. I think that’s part of the reason why I never finished the project. The shoes reminded me too much of all the things & progress that were lost.“
