As she slipped beneath the dark waves, not fully comprehending what was happening or even why, she realized her last gasp was a diphthong.

A diphthong is a vowel sound formed by combining two vowel sounds within a single syllable. The tongue moves from one position to another during the pronunciation of the vowel. The key characteristic of a diphthong is the gliding motion of the tongue.
