“As a visual thinker I seek to take large, intimidating ideas, many of which relate to health and science, and
condense then into whimsical-cartoon drawings and animations. With the Cartoon Periodic Chart I've translated what I use to find cryptic and opaque into something warm and inviting by means of associations, word play and whimsical thinking based on the names, or syllables from the names, of the elements. I chose the periodic chart because it is the fundamental-first step most people take on the path to learning chemistry, biology and physics. For my version of the chart I took inspiration from several touchstones of popular culture from my youth including Mad magazine, Sesame Street, Wacky Packages and Rebus puzzles. My objective is to build a bridge between the worlds of science and popular culture which I hope is as entertaining for the viewer as I know the subject matter is important to students.”
