For a few years I have been making images as a way of exploring the complexities of my family roots. It is a process to understand what it means to be part of a family that has the duality of 200 years of history in the United States on one side and recent first-generation immigrants on the other. These complexities are found in many families’ histories and often carry these questions: “Where do I belong?” and “Where am I welcome?”

I found myself alone on the beach in Fort Lauderdale close to New Years 2025. I had just returned from Argentina, where I met my extended family there for the first time. I’d hoped to be sharing stories of this encounter amongst family in Florida but arrived in the US just as they were leaving on holiday. It was a new experience to feel at home with family in a place so unknown and then return to one that I have been to many times, and it feel like another planet. As I sat on the beach watching the light of the stars and boats in the distance, even the ground itself started to feel as if it were Martian.
