Internal Views
Internal views is a show that began with a question. Why do certain objects consistently appear in my work? For me, this was a complicated question. As a visual thinker I tend to think symbolically. The answer came as answers sometimes do, late at night when one's brain has been spinning. An idea emerges somewhat like one of the ping pong balls in a lottery machine. I realized that these objects were symbols that represent parts of my creative process.
The work in this show is my most personal, the images are a snapshot, a narrative of what occurs in my mind. They are the triumphs and frustrations, the self doubt and elation that comes from choosing to take one's inner world and make it available for public interpretation. It is my answer to the question, "Where do the ideas come from?"
My process is based on experimentation with traditional and historical photographic processes. Each image has been created with the intension of not being able to duplicate it. Random chance, expired chemistry and decades old photo papers create intriguing and beautifully imperfect images imperfect images. There are no computers or archival printers in my work for that very reason. Beautiful and imperfect, they stand for each one of us.
