Whenever we recall a memory, our brains edit parts of the story, and through years of this revision, memories distort and wane. In my late teens and early twenties, I suffered eight traumatic brain injuries that altered the way my brain creates and stores memories. Through this, I learned that I cannot trust my own brain. What I am left with are what I call “mis-rememberings;” memories that have been edited and changed through the process of recollection and degradation of time. Through painting, my work overwhelms and confuses the viewer in a way akin to the immense rush of a memory coming back – whether that's caused by a song heard in a passing car, the smell of the first day of spring, or a sunbeam reflected off water. The permanent nature of oil paint allows these moments to gain a sense of perpetuity. In reflecting on what I still remember, I set down in stone the fragments of memories I believe to be true and find comfort in what the brain holds onto.
