SUMMER KENNEDY'S The Only Way Out Is Through

I’m a non-binary mixed media artist. I started using the checkerboard pattern in my art in 2008. I like how you can warp and manipulate the squares to make an illusion. I use the illusions to represent complicated emotions. I also like illusions because it is a harmless prank on the viewers brain.

This black on black checkered piece embodies a haunting exploration of darkness within myself, reflecting in themes of shame, ptsd and personal struggle. Have you ever felt so low for a long period of time? Did you think it was never going to end? The ongoing checkered pattern represents feeling stuck within my own darkness. Instead of looking away and repressing, I am confronting this head on. Understanding why I react the way I do and where it all started. To hopefully let go and heal.
