From Janssen’s Helvetica Series “These twenty-six cyanotypes are derived from the uppercase letters of the Helvetica typeface. Through duplicating, rotating, and imposing each letter's structure upon itself, mandala-like images result, featuring hundreds of perceived values and harmonies, ghostly implied volumes, and moiré or interference patterns. Helvetica, in use for over sixty-five years, is arguably one of the most lauded and popular typefaces ever created. This set of characters has been employed in countless design products including corporate logos, transit system signage, government documents, and an endless variety of application by novices and professionals alike. In these prints, the familiar becomes foreign. The notion of individual marks of text are reinvented while a typeface prized for its simplicity and clear communication is convoluted and the original letterforms take on a distinctly different intention of pause and meditation, suggesting an inner communion in a world barraged with information.
